4WD Treks Close to Melbourne: Validation of trek 11 - Mt Disappointment

The purpose of this trip is to validate Trek 11: Mount Disappointment from the book ‘4WD Treks Close to Melbourne’. This means that the trip may run slower than normal whilst time is taken to check each part of the route and note updates needed on track comments. The Mount Disappointment forest offers tracks covering various terrain, a sense of history and brilliant views out across one of Melbourne’s more picturesque water catchments. It is a heaven for an array of fauna and flora. Strath Falls are situated within the Strath Creek Falls Scenic Reserve in the northern section of the forest – we will do a short walk to the viewing platform.
Weather: Melbourne region in late spring. Could be sunny and warm, mild or wet. Check the weather before departure and bring appropriate clothing, footwear for the day, allowing for rain.
We reserve the right to postpone the trip if it is raining and wet.
Equipment: Below are the recommended vehicle requirements. If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.
A well-maintained 4WD vehicle, normal road tyres are OK for this trip in dry conditions (All Terrain tyres would be preferred and required when wet), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club). Bring your standard recovery gear including rated snatch strap, shackles and a shovel. Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.
Meals: We will be visiting listed picnic sites and campsites in the book where we will have our morning tea and lunch.
Morning tea stops and lunch will be in the bush – byo simple lunch and morning tea (byo thermos).
No camper trailers, pets or firearms.

Trip Standard: Medium – Much of the trek follows properly formed dirt roads, but a significant portion are 4WD tracks, albeit of relatively easy standard.
Fuel: a full tank ex Melbourne (fuel available in Wallan)
Distance: Approx. distance 69 km of mainly high range driving.
Duration: 1 day
Convoy limit: 10 vehicles
Meeting arrangements: We will depart at 9:30 am from Wallan out the front of Open House Café, Shop 4/51 High St, Wallan VIC 3756. If you plan to get coffee beforehand, then you will need to arrive a little earlier. We will aim to finish about 4.30 pm in Strath Creek.
Club Guest Registration policy: It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event.
i.e. non- members can no longer register on the day with the trip leader.

Also if a non-member wishes to bring their own vehicle, the member inviting the non-member must contact the trip leader for approval to bring the vehicle. Such approval will take into account skills of the driver, suitability of the vehicle and whether or not a place within the convoy limit is available for a non-member's vehicle.
