Marysville to Mount Matlock (and back)

Date and time:  Saturday, 22nd February 2025  9:15 am – 05:30 pm

Trip Standard:  Easy/ medium in dry conditions – mainly gravel forestry roads and tracks, a short climb to Mount Matlock is rated as medium.

Description:   Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the below requirements for this trip.

Easy summer day trip to explore Yarra Forests and Mount Matlock area.  Initially, I planned Trek 6 'Mt Matlock' from Robert Pepper’s book.  It is a pretty straight forward trek along well formed forestry roads (Marysville-Woods Point Road and Warburton-Woods Point Road) and can be done in 2-3 hours. I would like to propose some detours and explore a few other options between Marysville and Mount Matlock to make the trip more interesting. We will make a few stops to visit Pfeiffer Falls, Evelyn Falls, Cora Lynn Falls, The Big Culvert and Cambarville Historical Settlement. From there, if time allows, we can do a short stroll to Elephant Tree or The Big Tree.

In majority the trek will be following green rated roads, but there will be also a longer track section - Frenchmans Spur Track.

It will be a kind of exploratory trip – I won’t have a chance to do a recon and will drive most of the sections for the first time.  There are other easier roads to the destination, and we can alter the route if the planned trek appears to be too hard.

Weather:  Yarra Forest and Mount Matlock area in summer can be sunny and warm or colder and wet. Check the weather forecast before departure and bring appropriate clothing and footwear.

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for this trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

A well-maintained 4WD vehicle, normal road tyres are OK for this trip in dry conditions (All Terrain tyres would be preferred and required when wet), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club). Bring your standard recovery gear including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel. It is an easy/ medium trek, but after rain roads can be wet, slippery and with some puddles (especially clay sections).

Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

No camper trailers, pets or firearms
