For Easter 2026, I would like to propose a 'combo' long weekend trip in the stunning Mount Buller region. The basecamp will be in Merrijig which surroundings provide a perfect backdrop for a weekend filled with off-road experiences and scenic views.
The trip plan caters for various activities to make the most of our time together. From easy to hard 4WD treks, leisurely walks or hikes, photography opportunities to relaxed social gatherings – something for everyone to enjoy.
Please see below an exemplary trip plan. We will keep some flexibility to adjust the schedule depending on weather conditions, particularly for days 2 and 3.
Day 1: Sunset trip to Craig’s Hut (~34 km x 2)
Day 2: 4WD medium trek
or
- Mount Stirling via Pineapple Flat and King River Hut (Trek 3 from the book '4WD Treks of The High Country’) (~79 km)
Day 3: 4WD and hiking day
- 4WD medium trek to Mount Stirling (~56 km)
- Telephone Box Junction to Mount Stirling Summit (14-16 km loop walk)
or
- 4WD medium trek to Lake Cobbler Hut (~51 km x 2)
- Lake Cobbler Hut to Mount Cobbler Summit (10 km return walk)
- Sunrise or sunset at Mount Buller Summit
Day 4:
- 4WD easy trek from Mount Buller to Tolmie via Evans Creek Hut (Trek 4 from the book '4WD Treks of The High Country’) (~63 km)
Weather: Alpine environment in autumn can be potentially cold and wet, so please bring clothing, footwear and camping gear (if you camp) suitable for the conditions and review the weather forecast for the Alpine area prior to the weekend.
Equipment: Below are the recommended vehicle requirements. If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for this trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.
Good off-road tyres (All-terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club), a well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good ground clearance (200 mm recommended as a minimum), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, recovery boards and shovel.
Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.
No pets or firearms.
Accommodation: Participants will arrange their own accommodation for three nights (3rd to 6th April). Merrijig offers a range of options, including motels, apartments, and campgrounds located nearby (e.g. Carters Mill Campground).
Meals: Coffee stops will be held in the bush, so please bring your own simple morning and afternoon tea. Consider packing a thermos or a small gas stove for tea or coffee.
Dinners will depend on our accommodation arrangements.
It would be great to have a dinner together. There are several restaurants in Mount Buller village and Merrijig, and we’ll make a booking once we know the number of participants.
