4WD Treks Close to Melbourne: Validation of Trek 15, Inland from Anglesea

Date and time:  9:00 for 9:30am, Saturday 23 March 2024.

Trip Standard:  Medium – mostly gravel forestry roads, some steep.

Anglesea area has some steep clay tracks that can get very slippy in the wet which are classed as dry weather only. If it's wet, we'll find more suitable alternatives.

Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the following requirements for this trip.

Description: This is a validation trip running from Anglesea to Winchelsea. We shall start at Anglesea and follow/validate the original trek.  The route takes us through Anglesea Heath Reserve and Otway National Park. Probably best described as a pleasant forest/heathland drive with occasional tricky bits.

On completion of the trek in the book, we shall head back to Anglesea, exploring other tracks in the area. Potentially marking out a wet-weather alternative route.

If you prefer, you can make this a short trip by exiting at Winchelsea.

Weather:  Expect pleasant summertime conditions. (Keep an eye on weather, bring gear as required. No special weather gear required)

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

A well-maintained vehicle with All Terrain tyres would be preferred. UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club). After rain the track has a few muddy spots so consider mud tyres if there is rain ahead of the weekend.  If you have it, bring your standard recovery gear including, rated snatch strap, shackles and a shovel.  Not suitable for All-wheel drive vehicles.

Additional Equipment required Compressor as we may air down if there has been recent wet weather.

Morning tea and lunch will be on the road.  BYO snack, meal and thermos ‘on the move’.

No camper trailers, pets or firearms

Maps and Reference Material:  The route that we will be following is in the Google Map link below. You can download the route and import it into your GPS application. There are also plenty of paper maps of the area.

Fuel:  With a round trip of less than 350km, a full tank ex Melbourne should be fine.  Fuel is available in Anglesea and Winchelsea

Distance:  Anglelsea is approximately 120 km from Melbourne and the track is 50km.  The trip is mostly off-road and a few km of bitumen roads.

Duration:  Maybe 4-5 hours

Convoy limit:  10 vehicles.

Meeting arrangements:  Anglesea can get congested on a Saturday morning, so we will meet at 9:00 in the carpark at the mouth of the Anglesea River, which is opposite 4Kings Cafe. Drive through Anglesea, heading West across the bridge. The carpark is on the left, just before the road turns sharply to go along the coast. If you plan to get breakfast/coffee beforehand the cafe is across the road. We will aim to finish about mid-afternoon.

Trip Leader:  Kenny Macleod, phone 0421 952 540, email kenny@scotel.com
