  Far North East Victoria & the Geehi Huts

  Date and time:  3:00pm, Saturday October 31 to Wednesday November 4

  Trip Standard:  Medium in dry conditions. Wet weather will make this trip more difficult and likely necessitate a route change. There will be a mix of bitumen roads, good gravel and low-range 4WDing on some reasonably steep tracks. There will also be a number of water crossings.

  Description:   Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the following requirements for this trip.
  

  A touring trip into the far north east high country of Victoria, then across the Murray River to the Geehi region of the Kosciuszko National Park.

  There will be a mix of bitumen, gravel roads and low range 4WDing. We will camp for one night at Native Dog Flat and three nights at Old Geehi Hut. All the campgrounds will have limited facilities, likely only long-drop toilets. We will need to carry firewood and while almost every campground will be near a river, best to be self sufficient with water.

  Omeo, at the start of the trip, and Khancoban at the end of the trip will be our refuelling stops.

  Proposed Schedule:

  October 31:  3.00pm - depart Omeo (with full tank of fuel & other provisions).  4.30pm - Arrive at Native Dog Flat and set up camp

  Nov 1 -Travel from Native Dog Flat to Old Geehi Hut. The route will depend on track conditions and whether camper trailers are on the trip.

  Nov 2 - Touring around the Geehi region looking at the local huts and scenery.

  Nov 3 -Touring around the Geehi region looking at the local huts and scenery, or possibly a 4WD trip back into Victoria for the day.

  Nov 4 - Travel from Old Geehi Hut, through Khancoban and Corryong home to Melbourne. This is all bitumen roads.

  Weather:  Be prepared for cold, alpine weather. If warm, we will be camping near rivers most nights so also bring along swimming gear as well. Please check the forecast before departure and come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear.  Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

  This is a largely dry weather trip and if it rains the route will need to be modified.

  Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

  A well-maintained 4WD vehicle with All Terrain tyres, UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club). Bring your standard recovery gear including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel.  These are medium treks, but after rain roads can be wet, slippery and with some puddles.

  Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

  Camper trailers are welcome. Please let the trip leader know when signing-up as it will affect the route chosen. No caravans or pets.

  Accommodation:  Every night of the trip will be camping in National Park campgrounds. In NSW that will involve park and camping fees. Campgrounds will be reasonably primitive with long-drop toilets the only services. We will need to carry firewood.

  Campfires:  Please bring a bag of wood per vehicle. There’s three nights’ camping at Old Geehi where we need to be self sufficient with firewood. All the campsites we are going to are reasonably popular and generally denuded of decent firewood. Chainsaws and firewood collection are banned in NSW National Parks.

  Meals:  You will need to be self-sufficient for all meals.

  Maps and Reference Material:  Any maps you will be using.

  Additional Equipment required:  Camping gear, food and water for the weekend.  Clothing for wet and cold conditions.  Morning tea will be in the bush each day – byo thermos, etc. 

  Fuel:  Please have a full tank of fuel from the meeting point at Omeo. I do not expect anyone would need any jerry cans. The refuelling point will be at Khancoban on the way home.

  Distance:  Omeo is approximately 380 km from Melbourne.  The trip distance is approximately ???km of high and low range driving. 

  Duration: 5 days 

  Convoy limit: 8 vehicles 

  Meeting arrangements:  We will meet in the public car park near the Golden Age Hotel in Omeo at 3pm on October 31 and aim to finish the trip around 2pm in Corryong on November 5.

  Yarra State Forest 4wd Tracks – Ex Reefton II

  Date and time:  9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Sunday 8th November 2026.

  NOTE: 50% of this trip is allocated to new members that have just completed training. Put yourself on the wait list and priority will be given to the new trainees.

  Trip Standard: Medium. Training and equipment required.
  Some steep hills requiring low-range and some rocky and rutted sections as well.  All seasonally closed tracks are expected to have been opened in early November

  Description: This a re-run of the Wednesday trip held on 22 February 2026.  The variability of track terrain and lush forest environment makes the itinerary appealing to both seasoned 4WD adventurers and members who may have recently completed driver training seeking to build on their skills. 

  This trip covers 12 of the 14 4WD tracks in the “rectangle” enclosed by the Reefton Hotel, Ada tree, Starlings Gap and East Warburton. Barring two tracks of only trivial interest, and apart from some small changes in track sequence, together with the addition of the previously closed Muddy Creek Tk, this itinerary is Trek 15, Beyond Warburton, added in the current 5^th edition of 4WD Treks Close to Melbourne.  All participants will be given turn by turn directions for this modified route at the Reefton Hotel 9.00 am trip briefing and air down.

  Weather:  Weather will be monitored in the week before the trip.  A prior inspection of the intended route will be conducted to determine if any modifications are required.

  Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for the trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

  Good off-road tyres (All Terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club), a well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good ground clearance (200mm recommended as a minimum), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, shovel.  Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent. 

  Map:  Rooftop Maps: Yarra Valley – West Gippsland Adventure Map.

  Fuel:  A full tank ex Melbourne.

  Distance:  Estimated round trip from the Reefton Hotel is circa 90 km.  

  Duration: One day

  Convoy limit: 10 vehicles

  Meeting arrangements:  We will meet at the Reefton Hotel at 9:00 am sharp, for collection of emergency contact envelopes, trip briefing and airing down. Coffee and toilet facilities are available at Warburton en route to the Reefton Hotel (open 11:00 am – 5:00 pm Sundays). We aim to finish no later than 4:30 pm at the Reefton Hotel to air up and return emergency contact envelopes.

  Warburton Wanderings - mid week day trip

  Date and time:  9.00am – 4.00pm, Wednesday 11 Nov 2026

  Trip Standard:  Easy (Green). Ideally suited to new members seeking to build on proficiency training.  The 4WD tracks selected will be progressively move from flat and easy through to some moderate challenges on the easy spectrum. Some low range driving will be included.  RRCV proficiency driver training or equivalent is preferable, but drivers are not required have completed that training for this trip.

  Description:  A scenic day in the Yarra Ranges starting at Warburton. First off are stopovers at points of interest on bitumen along the Yarra River heading towards Woods Point.  Then it’s off to well-maintained gravel roads in the forest proper to the historic Ada tree for a walk and BYO lunch.  The afternoon will be devoted to 4WD tracks enroute back to Warburton. Some of these may include a few seasonally re-opened tracks.

  Weather:  Spring can be variable, and anything from sunny to cold and wet, so please bring clothing, footwear suitable for the conditions and keep an eye on the weather forecast for the area.

  Equipment:  Below are the vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

  A well maintained vehicle with All Terrain or Mud Terrain tyres.  UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club).  An air pressure pump and gauge.  Recovery gear is not mandatory, but if you have it, bring your standard recovery gear including, rated snatch strap, shackles and a shovel

  Morning tea and lunches will be in the bush – byo simple, “on the move” lunches and morning teas (byo thermos).

  No camper trailers, pets or firearms.

  Distance:  Approx 90km for the round trip starting and finishing in Warburton.

  Trip Standard: Medium in dry conditions - Training required, also see Equipment requirements. 

  This is a medium-difficulty trek. A combination of easy and medium tracks (low range driving might be required).  While generally manageable, wet weather can significantly increase the challenge, making roads slippery, with muddy sections and standing water in places.

  Description: Lerderderg State Forest is one of the best destinations near Melbourne for a day off-road trip.

  We will tackle a mix of easy and medium tracks, perfect for those keen to test their skills and vehicles without going extreme. 

  It’s an exploratory trip! No recon, no guarantees, just a rough plan and a good dose of curiosity. Expect rugged terrain, winding bush tracks, creek crossings, and forest roads that twist through towering gums. There are other easier roads to the destination, and we can alter the route if the planned trek appears to be too hard.

  We will finish in Trentham – in 2025 named Victoria's Top Tiny Tourism Town so you may decide to enjoy one of its restaurants for a meal.

  Targeted at new members, but also open to members who have recently changed vehicles or need a refresher. This course is free to new members and a nominal charge is applicable for repeat members. The RRCV's Driver Trainers are accredited with FWDV and on completion of both theory and practical sessions, you will receive a proficiency certificate that is recognised by all FWDV affiliated clubs.

  Theory will be held at

  Time: Course commences at 7:30pm sharp - please arrive at least 10 minutes beforehand to complete some paperwork. Please bring your licence. 

  The practical session is on the SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22nd at the Black Spur Inn  start-08.30am. (More details provided at the Theory session) - sign up here for both the theory and practical sessions.

  Our Christmas party & December meeting is at the Black Rock Yacht Club from 6:30 for socialising and food (BYO) - formal meeting will start after food, about 7:30.

  All members and partners are invited to attend the December Christmas Club meeting where each member is asked to bring along a plate of food to share for a picnic-style dinner.

  Please RSVP/Register if you are planning to join, so we know how many are coming.  If your partner is coming, add them as a guest.

  We will provide tickets at the door for 2 drinks each person - wine, beer or soft drink

  Kindly note that there will not be any opportunity to heat or re-heat food so please consider bringing along a cold picnic hamper style of sweet 'n savoury snacks, salads, sandwiches, fruit & cheese platers, cakes, loaves, tarts, and scones.

  Tallarook State Forest, situated only an hour and 15 minutes’ drive of Melbourne, provides excellent opportunities for recreational four-wheel driving.

  This trip combines two treks from the 5th Edition of '4WD Treks Close to Melbourne':

  Trek 3 – Tallarook Plateau and Trek 13 – Tallarook Wanderings.

  We will tackle a mix of easy and medium-rated tracks that provide some challenge without going extreme. Whether you're looking to build confidence behind the wheel, learn from experienced members, or simply enjoy a day out in the bush, this trip has something for everyone (new and old members).

  Expect rugged terrain, winding bush tracks, forest roads and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of this area. There are alternative easier routes available, and the itinerary can be adjusted if any planned sections appear too challenging for the convoy.

  We will visit Mount Hickey, the highest point in the forest at 805 m above the sea level. There are various granite outcrops around the forest, great as short scenic stops or lunch spots.

  Weather: Summer around Melbourne is typically sunny and warm, but conditions can vary. Please check the forecast before departure and come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

  This is strictly a dry-weather trip. If rain is forecast, I reserve the right to cancel or postpone the trip with one week's notice. 

  Equipment: Below are the recommended vehicle requirements. If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for this trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

  A well-maintained 4WD vehicle with All Terrain tyres, UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club). Bring your standard recovery gear including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel.

  This is a medium-difficulty trek. While generally manageable, wet weather can significantly increase the challenge, making roads slippery, with muddy sections and standing water in places.

  Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

  Meals: Coffee stops will be held in the bush, so please bring your own simple "on the move" morning tea and lunch.

  Trip Standard: Medium in dry conditions – combination of easy and medium tracks (low range driving will be required).

  Fuel: a full tank ex Melbourne (fuel available in Broadford)

  Distance: Melbourne – Broadford (90 km), Broadford – Murchison Gap Lookout (75 km of high and low range driving), Murchison Gap Lookout – Melbourne (99 km) – Total: 265 km

  Duration: 1 day

  Convoy limit: 8 vehicles

  No camper trailers, pets or firearms.

  Meeting arrangements:  We will depart before 9:15 am from Broadford from the front of The Duck Inn Cafe (101 High Street, Broadford VIC 3658). If you plan to get coffee beforehand, then you will need to arrive a little earlier.

  We will aim to finish about 4:00 pm at Murchison Gap Lookout (Strath Creek Road).

  Club Guest Registration policy:  It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event.

  Christmas Get-together weekend @ the Black Spur Inn

  Date and time: Sat 12th December - Sun 13th December. 

  Arrive any time, with Happy Hour @ 4pm on Saturday - a couple of people will make a weekend of it and arrive on Friday evening. If there's enough interest, we may try to run a trip. 

  Register your attendance, and add guests, so we know how many are coming.

  Description: This is an informal gathering, with the only scheduled activities being Happy Hour at 4pm and Dinner gathering at 6pm, both on the Saturday. Dinner is BYO food and drink, or order food from the Black Spur (menu TBA).

  Some of us will arrive Friday night and stay for lunch on Sunday.

  Camp fire will be running, if rules allow.

  A cabin, with toilet and shower will be made available for campers.

  We may post a menu nearer the time and once we get a better idea of numbers.  If so, we will ask you to pre-order your meal a few days in advance to help Di Kennedy plan the day.

  If weather is bad, we will move inside to the main function room for dinner.

  Note on booking accommodation:

  You don't need to book a campsite but you do need to book if you want accommodation at the Black Spur Inn.

  Likely schedule:

  • Happy Hour is at 4pm on Saturday but people will start arriving from mid morning.
  • Dinner gathering at 6pm (giving people time to prepare/cook their dinner if not ordering food from Black Spur)
  • After dinner - catching up around the camp fire.
  • Overnight camping is available for those that want to stay, and there may be rooms available and cabins - Ask Di. 
  • Sunday chilled day with friends -  Leave when you want or go on a short trip.
  • If we get organised, we may run some info/skills sessions and/or a trip on the Sunday

  We will meet and camp next to or behind the Black Spur Inn - we won't be hard to find. 

  Equipment: If stopping there on the Saturday evening - Camping gear, food, refreshments, and water for the weekend - or buy food at the bar. Toilet provided for campers.

  If going on the surrounding 4x4 tracks, the usual tyres and recovery gear applies.

  Distance: Approximately 90 km from Melbourne.

  People limit: No limit, bring a friend if you want - however Temporary Membership required if you are taking them on a club trip (but check if there is a trip planned).

  Meeting arrangements: Next to the Black Spur Inn - Follow the signs or look for members of the club. We'll be hard to miss.

  Date and time:  9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday 31^st January 2027.

  Description:  We will meet at the Toolangi Recreation area (about 1 to 2 hours drive from the Melbourne CBD) at 9:00 am on Sunday 31^st January.  There will be one or more morning half day trips of varying standards, a fairly long lunch break back at the recreation area and then one or more afternoon trips.  We will plan to finish at the recreation area by 4:00 pm, allowing plenty of time for the trip home.

  The format of this day will allow members to participate in a morning activity or an afternoon activity or both.  The recreation area has electric bar-b-ques, a shelter and toilets.  The half day trip format will allow families to participate in short trips that are more appropriate for young children.  The Toolangi Recreation reserve has an oval and surrounding bushland for family activities during the lunch break.

  The club will provide a BBQ sausage sizzle lunch (sausages, bread, etc), but you are welcome to BYO lunch if you want to.  BYO table and chairs if you want to sit and chat with other members during the lunch break. 

  On arriving at the reserve, we will have one or more trips that you can sign-up for.  After you have had a chance to selecting a trip there will be a driver briefing where you will then be introduced to a trip leader and then head out into the bush for the morning.  The same trip allocation procedure will be followed at lunch for the afternoon trip(s).  The number of trips will depend on the number of participants and availability of trip leaders. The planned routes will be subject to weather and fire danger restrictions.

  For those that would like to stay either Saturday or Sunday night, camping is allowed on and around the reserve and the toilets will be open.

  This should be a relaxed day and a nice social way to start the club year.

  Weather:  Should be warm at this time of year, but this is Melbourne so be prepared and watch the weather forecast leading up to the trip and bring appropriate clothing and footwear for a possible short walk.

  Equipment:  A well-maintained vehicle with normal road tyres are OK for this trip (All Terrain tyres would be preferred), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club).  Recovery gear is not mandatory, but if you have it, bring your standard recovery gear including, rated snatch strap, shackles and a shovel.

  We will have morning tea in the bush, do BYO thermos, etc and lunch at the Toolangi reserve.  There are no shops nearby, so you will need to be self-sufficient for the day. 

  No pets or firearms

  Trip Standard:  Easy/Medium - some steep, low-range hill climbs and some rocky tracks. but mainly easy forest roads.!

  Fuel:  A full tank ex Melbourne.

  Distance:  The half day trips will be approximately 40 - 50 Km each.

  Duration:  1 day

  Convoy limit:  Unrestricted

  Meeting arrangements:  We will meet at the Toolangi Reserve, Cherrys Lane Toolangi (about 1:30 to 2:00 hours drive from the Melbourne CBD) at 9.00am (can be found on Google maps).  We will aim to finish about 4.00pm back at the reserve.

  Mount Disappointment Night Trip

  Date and time:   Saturday, 20^th February 2027 
  Approximately 7:30 pm – 07:30 am (TBC)

  Trip Standard: Medium in dry conditions - Training is required – the trek follows formed dirt roads, but a significant portion are 4WD tracks (low range driving will be required). Driving after dark will also add to the overall challenge.

  NOTE: As training is required, new members will need to register on the waitlist and be allocated a place by the trainers.

  Description: 

  This trip will follow the itinerary of trek 14^th 'Mount Disappointment', from the 5^th Edition of '4WD Treks Close to Melbourne'.

  The Mount Disappointment forest offers tracks covering various terrain. We will be tackling a combination of easy and medium tracks, but the real excitement will come from driving them at night.

  On Saturday, 20^th February, the moon will be approaching its full phase (100% on Sunday at 10:23 am). If the sky is clear, we will be travelling under beautiful natural moonlight (moonrise at 7:44 pm | moonset at 6:50 am).

  We will make planned stops at Anderson Garden, Blairs Hut and No. 1 Camp along the way.

  There are other easier roads to the destination, and we can alter the route if the planned trek appears to be too hard.

  At the end of Murchison Spur Road is the Murchison Gap Lookout, which provides stunning views over the rolling hills. Facing east, it is an ideal spot for capturing beautiful sunrise photographs, especially when the valley is filled with low-lying clouds (sunrise at 6:55 am).

  We will finish our trip in Strath Creek.
