Powelltown to Gembrook - History Tour  (New member trip)

Date and time:  Saturday, 12th September 2026  9:00 am – about 4:30 pm

Meeting arrangements: TBC - Likely at Powelltown Rest Area picnic ground 

This pre-training trip is provided for new members to meet other new members and build experience driving under club convoy procedures. 

Trip Standard: Easy – little or no Four Wheel Driving experience required. Road tyres are acceptable. Front and rear recovery points at Trip Leader’s discretion. Expected track classification to be encountered – Green.

Trip description: This is a short easy trek, starting in the historic timber town of Powelltown and passing through forests dominated by towering mountain ash, messmate, grey gum and myrtle beech to reach the Kurth Kiln Regional Park. There will be plenty of time to explore the natural and historic features that this region offers. This includes the opportunity to see the historic Kurth Kiln and enjoy some short pleasant walks at Seven Acre Rock and Shiprock Falls. The trip finishes in Gembrook. 

Equipment and driver requirements: Well maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent) and 200mm clearance (recommended)

UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club).
Most established members carry a wired-in 80 (or 40) channel UHF radio plus a handheld UHF radio, for when outside the car. 
For now, a 5w handheld UFB radio is a good start as a cheap but necessary addition to your 4WD kit.

Weather: The tracks should be drivable regardless of weather.

Distance: 38.3km

Fuel: Available Yarra Junction and Gembrook

Convoy limit: 8 - may double up if enough people are on the waitlist. 

Meals: Lunch and morning tea will be in the bush. Bring simple 'on the move' lunches and morning teas.
