Snow trip - Walhalla to Jamieson via Mt Skene

Date and time: 27/28 July 2024

Description Snow driving and camping - Mt Skene

The annual pilgrimage over Mt Skene is again being held, albeit a bit earlier than  last year to hopefully catch the early freshly fallen snow fall. We will meet in Walhalla at 9am on Saturday morning.  We will then make our way along the Aberfeldy-Walhalla Road,  passing through  Aberfeldy before heading east over Mt Selma along open 4WD tracks before joining  the Licola -Jamieson Road and driving up to the summit of Mt Skene where we will set up camp for the night. On Sunday we head down the Licola- Jamieson Road,   where we should arrive at Jamieson early afternoon

Weather:  Alpine environment so will  be  cold and can potentially be wet and windy, which challenges us to be comfortable in those conditions.

Equipment:  Vehicles need to have low range 4WD capability with good all-terrain tyres, good ground clearance and UHF radio equipped.

Usual recovery gear of a snatch strap, shackles, shovel, dampener plus snow chains and recovery tracks.

Warm clothes,  wet weather gear including waterproof footware.  A good tent (pop-up tents can prove to pop-down in heavy snow), sleeping bag (suitable to better than -10oC), and sleeping mat suitable for camping in the snow.

Can everyone please bring a bag of wood  to enable a warm fire to be enjoyed by all.

Trip Standard:  Medium to hard  (depending on the weather & track conditions (snow))

Fuel:  a full tank ex Moe .  If your vehicle is diesel then add an anti-jelling additive before filling your tank with diesel fuel .Torque Breaker is one such additive with many others in the market.

Distance:  Approximate . distance from Walhalla to Jamieson is 150 km of mainly low range driving.

Duration: 2 days

Convoy limit:  10 vehicles per convoy. Travel in 2 convoys.

Meeting arrangements:  We will meet at the Star Hotel carpark in Walhalla and depart at 9.00am sharp.  If you plan to get coffee beforehand then you will need to arrive a little earlier.  We will aim to finish early afternoon in Jamieson, depending on the snow conditions on the Sunday morning. Some may wish to stay in Walhalla on  the Friday night before the trip, with a good free camp area at the top end of Walhalla.
