Exploring The Pyrenees

Date and time:  9:00am Saturday 23rd May to 4:00pm, Sunday 24th May  

Trip Standard:  Medium – Difficult.  Tracks will be 4wd varying from graded tracks to rough and potentially sharp rocks

Description:   Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the following requirements for this trip.

The Pyrenees State Forest is 15km west of Avoca and said to be one of the hidden 4wd gems in Victoria, with hills, scenery, camping and tracks with different degrees of difficulty.

We will explore tracks like Landsborough Track, Old Bluff, Emery, Fraser, Slate Quarry and Sugarloaf tracks.

There are sights to see like Governor Rock Lookout and the Waterfalls Picnic Area

We will camp the night at Glenpatrick Recreation Reserve (gold coin) or you may return to Avoca for caravan park or motel accommodation.

There maybe an opportunity to visit a winery if time permits or you may do a winery tour before or after this trip

Accommodation: Free camping at Glenpatrick Recreation Reserve.  Avoca has a Caravan Park (avocacaravanpark.com.au) and plenty of other bookable accommodation

Weather:  The weather may be cooler during the day (below 20C) and overnight temperatures can average around 5C.  If the rainfall is high we may cancel as the tracks could be very slippery on clay. 

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

  • A well-maintained 4WD vehicle fitted with All-Terrain tyres.
  • A UHF radio is required (you may bring your own or borrow one from the club).
  • Bring your standard recovery gear kit, including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel.

No camper trailers, pets or firearms

Maps and Reference Material:  Paper Map - The Pyrenees Touring Map (Meridian).

Additional Equipment required:  Camping gear, food and water if camping overnight at Glenpatrick Recreation Reserve or the Avoca caravan park (avocacaravanpark.com.au).  Clothing for wet, windy and cold conditions.  Morning tea and lunches will be in the bush each day – byo thermos, etc.

Distance:  Fuel is available in Avoca. 

Duration: 2 days.  Saturday, full day

Convoy limit: 8 vehicles 

Meeting arrangements:  We will meet at Shear Delights Bakery, 105 High Street , Avoca, VIC, Australia, at 9.00am for coffee and briefing. We will aim to finish about 4.00pm on Sunday. 

Club Guest Registration policy:  It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event.  i.e.  non-members can no longer register on the day with the trip leader.

Also, if a non-member wishes to bring their own vehicle, the member inviting the non-member must contact the trip leader for approval to bring the vehicle. Such approval will take into account skills of the driver, suitability of the vehicle and whether or not a place within the convoy limit is available for a non-member's vehicle.
