Range Rover Club Victoria

All vehicle makes welcome – it’s not about the cars - it’s about the people

Range Rover Club of Victoria

The Range Rover Club of Victoria is one of Victoria’s longest-established 4WD Clubs having been founded in 1977, originally of Range Rover owners only. Over the years the club has grown to embrace owners of all makes of 4WD vehicles and people from all walks of life brought together by a love of the great outdoors and a sense of adventure!

The RRCV of today it is a family oriented four wheel drive touring club that supports a diverse range of interests and vehicles of all types. Whether you like harder High Country trips, fixed based camping or long outback touring trips our Trip Calendar has something for you. We aim to provide our Members with a wide range of activities and actively promote social, recreational and safe four wheel driving.

Our trips cater for drivers and families of all experiences levels. Indeed not all our trips involve four wheel driving. We also aim to get together regularly for social events such as winery tours and restaurant nights. We also provide driver training; via our FWDV accredited instructors.

Club meetings are held at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of most months and are currently a blend of face-to-face and online, via Zoom - where 40-50 members catch up each month. Our monthly club meetings are held at The Glasshouse (31 Station St Caulfield East, 3145) at Caulfield Racecourse. Many members turn up early to eat at the bistro beforehand.

Contact our Membership Secretary if you want to join the meeting memberships@rangeroverclub.org.au

Check out the calendar for more details and our new venue, and then come along and see what we’re about! (let us know you're coming so we can look out for you).

By the way, if you thought that we're just Range Rovers, check this out!  It's not about the cars, it's about the people.

Marysville iconic Steavenson Falls by Floodlight

Date and time:  4.00 pm - 7.00 pm, Saturday 26th July 2025, followed by optional 7.00 pm dinner at the Black Spur Inn, Narbethong   Optional Sunday morning 4WD activity to be decided over dinner.

Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the following requirements for this trip.

Trip concept: This an opportunity to experience and photograph the iconic Steavenson Falls in their daily floodlit state between dusk and 11pm. Prepare to be mesmerised and for the photographer within you to be enthralled. The Steavenson Falls are one of Victoria’s highest, with five cascades for a total descent of 122 metres, the last plummeting in a clear drop for more than 21 metres.

The idea is to be at Narbethong for a 4.00 pm briefing and depart at 4.30 pm sharp for Keppel Keppel Lookout, enroute to Steavenson Falls carpark. It is an easy 350 m walk to the bridge in front of the Falls, with viewing platforms either side.  [There is another platform at the top of the Falls via an 800m steep walk, but this is not floodlit and therefore not considered safe]. Return to the carpark can take in the illuminated turbine generator utilising water from the Steavenson River that powers the Falls floodlighting and provides Marysville’s water supply. There are 50 concrete steps at the end of this short side track back to the carpark entrance.

After the viewing there is the optional social dinner at 7.00 pm at the Black Spur Inn at Narbethong. Thereafter participants can elect to have prebooked accommodation for the night or return home. For folks interested in exploring some 4WD tracks on Sunday morning there are options that can be considered over dinner.

History: John Steavenson, the Assistant Commissioner of Roads and Bridges, first visited the area now known as Marysville in 1862. The Falls became a popular attraction once a track to the Falls was cut in 1866. They were floodlit on November 3, 1972. The area was impacted by bushfires in 1939 and in recent memory by the 2009 bushfires with catastrophic consequences for the Marysville township and surrounding forest. There has been a remarkable environmental and human habitation recovery, including restoration of the floodlighting installation.

Weather:  Expect cold and possibly wet conditions, necessitating appropriate clothing and footwear. Apart from a forecast of heavy rainfall, the trip will proceed. As Piotr Pecho noted in his 12/7/25 Toolangi trip remarks, “…rain enhances the natural beauty of the area – the forest becomes more lush green and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular”. Trip Registrants will be contacted by SMS at 7 pm on Wednesday 23rd July to confirm go/no and options attendances.

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

Keppel Lookout is accessed by gravel road and an easy sidetrack out of Marysville, Steavenson Falls ex Marysville is on bitumen road. High range 4WD is adequate.

However, any Sunday morning exploration of easy/medium 4WD tracks will mandate good off-road tyres (All Terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club), a well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good ground clearance (200mm recommended as a minimum), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, shovel. Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

No camper trailers, pets or firearms

Maps and Reference Material: Rooftop’s Marysville- Lake Eildon Adventure Map.

    Trip Standard:

Saturday – Easy. Some unsealed forest road and a short, uneven side track.

Sunday (tbc) – Medium. Possible steep, low-range inclines and some rocky tracks.

Fuel:  A full tank ex Melbourne.

Distance:  Sub 100 km departing from and returning to Narbethong for Saturday Falls visit and any Sunday morning activity.

Duration:  Saturday evening and potentially Sunday morning.

Marysville to Mount Matlock (and back) Winter edition

    Date and time:  9:15 am – 04:30 pm Saturday, 9th August 2025

Description:  Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the below requirements for this trip.

Winter edition of the Trek 6 'Mt Matlock' from Robert Pepper’s book.

This is a straightforward drive along well-formed forestry roads, including Marysville-Woods Point Road and Warburton-Woods Point Road.  In dry conditions, the route can be completed in 1-2 hours. However, if we get a decent amount of snow, conditions may become more challenging and elevate the difficulty level to hard.

The aim is to get as far into the snow as we safely can.  That doesn’t necessarily mean driving all the way up Mount Matlock.  Let’s enjoy the winter scenery and have a bit of fun spinning wheels in the snow!

Weather:  Yarra Forest and Mount Matlock area in winter can be cold and snowy. Check the weather forecast before departure and bring appropriate clothing and footwear.

Please note that I reserve the right to cancel or postpone the trip with a few days’ notice if rain is forecast.  The goal is to experience snow conditions and not to drive in the rain.

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.  If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for this trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

    • A well-maintained 4WD vehicle with All Terrain tyres is essential.
    • A UHF radio is required for convoy communication.  You may bring your own or borrow one from the club.
    • Bring your standard recovery gear kit, including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel.
    • Snow chains are recommended – ideally, at least one or two sets for the group. If you have snow chains and can bring them, please inform the trip leader.  Chains can also be hired in Marysville if needed.

Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

Meals:  Morning tea and lunch stops will be in the bush – BYO simple meals, snacks, water and thermos (can be cold).

No camper trailers, pets or firearms.

Maps and Reference Material:  Rooftop’s Marysville - Lake Eildon Adventure Map (Edition 4)

Trip Standard:  Medium – however, if there’s a lot of snow then this might turn into a difficult trek, so please be prepared for changing conditions.

Fuel:  a full tank ex Marysville

Total distance: 148 km.  Marysville – Matlock (74 km)  Matlock – Marysville (74 km)

    Duration: 1 day

    Convoy limit: 8 vehicles

Meeting arrangements:  We will depart at 9:15 am from Marysville from the front of Marysville Country Bakery (17 Murchison Street, Marysville VIC 3779). If you plan to get coffee beforehand, then you will need to arrive a little bit earlier. Same, if you plan to pick up snow chains.

We will aim to finish on at about 4:30 pm in Marysville.

Trip Leader:  Piotr Pecho mobile: 0427 439 908 email: piotr.pecho@gmail.com

Description:  **** Expressions of interest ****

"As remote as the Canning Stock Route, the unmaintained Anne Beadell Hwy offers some challenging terrain for serious off-roaders" [Hema Great Desert Tracks]

We are planning a trip covering the Anne Beadell Highway, from Coober Pedy to Laverton, followed by a jaunt around southwest WA, returning via the Nullabor and a side trip to Maralinga.

We will meet in Coober Pedy on Saturday for a start on the morning of Sunday 17th August. Traversing the Anne Beadell from here to Laverton will take up to a week. This part of the trip will be serious 4WD touring and we may need to take enough fuel for the whole 1326km as the Ilkurlka Roadhouse has not had fuel for over a year at the time of writing.

From Laverton we'll head to the SW corner of WA via Karlgoolie to take in some of the lovely sights in this part of the world. This part of the trip will be easy touring with plenty of fuel, shopping and sightseeing stops.

Finally we'll return via the Nullabor, taking in a side trip (optional) to visit Maralinga (tour costs ~$290 pp), before returning to Melbourne on 7th Sept.

This trip is in early planning stages but we though it would be useful to at least set some dates and give a rough plan for the trip.

If you are interested please register your interest here and get in touch: Mark.Bown@csiro.au, 0437251645

More details of itinerary to follow.

Please contact Sherry or Mark if you are unsure of any of the following requirements for this trip.

Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

This is a long trip into remote areas so you will also need two spare tyres, puncture repair kit, and spares appropriate to your vehicle. Make sure your vehicle has been fully serviced ahead of the trip, that tyres are in good condition, and replace batteries that are nearing the end of their life.

    No pets or firearms.
